Aunt Janet Leaves Us

Aunt Janet from Seattle came to visit us back in October and was able to observe Thanksgiving with us. Finally, she had enough and decided it was time to return to Seattle. But first, she decided to stop in Gibbon, NE to visit her niece and nephew for a few days. We certainly enjoyed Janet's visit and the kids, especially, became close to her. She will be missed.

We decided to have a little going-away party so the kids and grandkids could say their good-byes. These are just a few of the pictures taken.

Indian Campfire Cookout

We had the little indians over for a "cookout" in the fireplace. Mema found some indian headbands, we built a fire in the hearth and the little savages cooked some 'dogs -- with a little adult supervision. Our tribe for the evening consisted of Clay, Cammie, Tanner and Rylan.

Oh wait! Not those indians!

THESE INDIANS!!!

It was a fun evening and, thankfully, none of the little indians were hurt in the fire.

A Quiet Thanksgiving

We had a small but nice Thanksgiving this year. Son Scott flew in from St. Paul, Ashley brought Rylan over, Ginny joined us and, of course, Aunt Janet is visiting from Redmond. We just kind of laid all the food out and let folks serve themselves. We are very thankful that God brought Mema through the very difficult surgery and is now healing her.

All the grans think Uncle Scott is some sort of rock star. I guess because he is from out of town and isn't seen as much.
Here, Rylan tries to figure out how to use Mema's crutch.

Mema shows Rylan some of the nicer things that can be done with Pla-doh.

Mema's Knee - Update

Mema is progressing very nicely along the road to full recovery. Her PT persons say she is way ahead of usual expectations but then Mema always exceeds expectations. I won't publish all the pictures I took but this one of her in the hospital with Eddie's bunch pretty much speaks for itself.
Tanner especially liked the "trapeze" mounted over the hospital bed and now wants one over his at home.
Meanwhile, Mema takes a few tentative steps the day after the surgery. It is now 10 days after surgery and she is able to climb steps (she isn't supposed to). It won't be long before she is back running marathons.

Mema Gets a New Knee

Mema had her right knee replaced on Nov. 14. The total knee replacement was performed by one of the area's best surgeons and he was quite pleased with himself over the results. We checked into the hospital at 0630 and, as luck would have it, Judy was the first on the slate of several patients waiting to have similar procedures. After two hours it was over. She spent another two hours in recovery and then was gurneyed to her room. We had arranged for a suite of rooms so I was able to be with her the three nights she was in the hospital.

I can't say enough about the care of the nurses for her three-day stay. They were wonderful! Now she is home recuperating and doing the things PT tells her to do. So far she is exceeding all their expectations but then, Mema has always been an over-achiever.

Our friends and family have been just great with their encouragement, show of concern, and gifts of flowers and food for Mema. She is to not ride in a car for 3 weeks; not drive a car for 6 weeks and no airline travel for 8 weeks. She will be on crutches until she feels she can graduate to a cane. Then its up to her as to leave the cane behind.

Thanks to all of Judy's friends and family for your prayers and thoughts.

Halloween - October 31

Here are the lovely Duncan girls before heading out for a night of terrorizing the neighbors. Daddy Scott took his pet boa, June, out trick-or-treating.

Here our little Pumpkin Princess, Cammie. She looks innocent but will key your car in a New York second
Clay is our High School Musical entry .
I wanted to take a picture or two of the Raphael Gang but by the time I got there, they had all hit the streets except for Selma who was home sick. Below, Rylan contemplates trying to steal candy from cousin Cammie.
Here the little ruffians prepare to roll Eddie's house.Even Aunt janet got into the act. Eddie wheeled her around in her chair. She said it was the first time she had ever been trick-or-treating. Imagine - 89 years.

The Great Wolf Lodge

We went with Eddie, Melissa and kids for two nights at the Great Wolf Lodge in Williamsburg, VA. WOW!! What a great place for kids - and adults too. We shared a room that sort of had two bed rooms and managed OK. This place is so complete that we didn't have to leave the parking lot until we checked out.
The lodge featured an immense indoor water park complete with all kinds of watery attractions guaranteed to get anyone venturing near the place soaked to the skin. The kids loved it.
After we checked out we took in Colonial Williamsburg and treated the kiddies to a horse-drawn carriage ride.
Then it was on to the Yankee Candle Factory where the kids got to make their own candle and ogle the Christmas decorations.
I know not why Virginia allowed a company called the Yankee
Candle Factory to take up residence here in the Old Dominion. Somebody sure screwed up.

Halloween, v.2007

Mema staged her annual Halloween gala this past Saturday. Ghosts and goblins of all descriptions showed up for hot dogs, face painting, balloon clowns and lots of fun.

That's our exceptionally pretty Selma on the left.

Rylan finds a pumpkin she can lift with one hand.

Tanner thinks Mema's face picture is really funny.

We had a special guest this year, Aunt Janet from Redmond, WA, who is staying with us for a few weeks. She really enjoyed watching the kids have a good time outdoors in perfect weather.

Seattle Air Traffic Security

Mema and I visited the Seattle area this week with the purpose of looking in on our dear friend, Janet. We wound up bringing her back to Virginia with us but that's another story.

Seattle has one of the most disorganized, chaotic, mind-bendingly inept airport security systems in the country. At each end of their woefully undersized terminal building, passengers are literally herded through cattle-like lines (think Disney World on a busy day) where the requisite ticket and ID checks are made. Then they are spewed into the X-ray lines after being asked to remove shoes, coats, scarves, computers, etc.

The process took over 25 minutes and it wasn't one of the busy hours. Mema went through with Janet while I parked the rental car. The TSA folks there have adopted a "random" method of selecting which passengers need frisking and wanding. We were selected as possible terrorists - lovable ole me, Judy who needs a knee replacement and Janet who is almost blind, can't hear, and went through security in a wheel chair. I'm sure, with the current atmosphere of political correctness coupled with the fact that Seattle is a hotbed of social liberalism means that absolutely no olive-skinned, bearded, turban-wearing, Arab-speaking, Middle-Easterner, will ever be "randomly selected." God forbid we offend anyone trying to board a plane with explosive shoes. But grandmothers and infirm little old ladies are fair game to TSA.

The postscript to this is that, unbenownst to the average passenger (and I travel maybe 20 time a year) the "random" passenger has encoded on the boarding pass a code to alert the not-too bright TSA folks that "hey, pat this one down, Bruce!" Mine had such a code but it wasn't detected by the US Government employees at TSA. I didn't get frisked first time through. NOOO! I had to wait until my flight was called and the plane was boarding before an alert Delta gate person noticed and directed me back to TSA a distance of about 1/2 mile. Upon presenting my boarding pass it was somehow MY fault that I had escaped the frisker. I did make the flight -- barely.

This is our federal government at work. Now we find out that in major airports TSA can't find a fake bomb over 60% of the time. Remember when airport security was done by private firms? It was bad then but it WAS better by several percentage points. And this same government wants to run our health care industry. Try to imagine a doctor's office looking like the Seattle security area. Vote Republican.

The Pumpkin Patch

Our county has a berry farm that features so-it-yourself strawberry picking in the spring and pumpkin picking in the fall. We hadn't been out there since Clay was just 3 so away we went one sunny Saturday. Boy, has it grown! There were more rides, more food, more everything!

We loaded the kids on a tractor-towed trailer and went off on a hay ride to the pumpkins. The kids had a ball running through the patch trying to select just the right pumpkin for their very own.

After getting more pumpkins than we really needed and loading them into the car, the kids tried out the attractions. They especially liked playing in a big tank filled with shelled corn.

Clay's Homecoming Parade

They start them young these days. Elementary schools have parades, homecoming games, pep rallies and homecoming queens. Clay is a cheerleader at her school and for her football team so off we went to the school where, sure enough, there was a fire truck, some police, and floats with cheerleaders and football players (all in mineature) throwing candy to the crowd. It was a pleasant way to spend and evening. And the kids had fun.

Lions and Tigers and Bears Oh My!

We made a short trip to the zoo today with Tanner, Cammie and Rylan. What a pleasure to see them experience exotic animals for the first time. They enjoyed all the animals but got the biggest kick out of three small monkeys who were showing-out with a lot of swinging, screeching, and jumping around.

Our State Fair - 2007

We went to the Virginia State Fair which was a lot like the movie but without the romance, music, and Pat Boone. But it was a great state fair and the best one in our state! Neener.

We went to our state fair which, of couse is the best state fair in the state! No aruguments about that. We took Eddie and Melissa and their kids. Ginny went along to photograph the whole affair.

We did face painting, animal petting, junk food eating, ride riding, fishing for really cheaply-made stuffed toys, and lots of walking.
